Adrian Sawyer

Dr Adrian Sawyer is Professor of Taxation and Research Director for the University of Canterbury Business School in Christchurch, New Zealand. Adrian holds an SJD from the University of Virginia, and MCom(Hons), BCom and LLB degrees from the University of Canterbury. He is a CA (CA_ANZ) and CPA (CPA Australia), and a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. Adrian has been a consultant for the New Zealand Inland Revenue, the New Zealand Treasury and the Royal Society of New Zealand.

Adrian has an extensive publication record, with articles appearing in scholarly and professional journals and chapters in books published in Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America. Adrian is on numerous editorial boards, including: ATA Journal of Legal Tax Research, Australian GST Journal, Curtin Law & Taxation Review, E-Journal of Tax Research, Journal of Australian Taxation, Journal of the Australasian Tax Teachers Association, and Journal of Tax Administration. He is the Chair of the Editors of the New Zealand Journal of Taxation Law and Policy.

Adrian is the inaugural recipient of the Cedric Sandford Medal, a recipient of the Australian Tax Teachers Association (ATTA) Hill Medal, and former President of ATTA, receiving the Patrons Medal during his tenure. Adrian’s research interests include tax administration and compliance, international taxation (including international organisations), e-commerce taxation, environmental taxation, tax history, taxpayers’ rights, and tax rulings.
